REVISS Working to Combat Denial and Delay

In January this year REVISS represented the interests of the Radiation Processing Industry at an IAEA Working Group in Vienna. A pamphlet was produced to promote the importance of radioactive materials in everyday life and to encourage co-operation in facilitating the transportation of Class7 radioactive material. The pamphlet was published by the IAEA in October and copies may be requested from REVISS

The target audience for the pamphlet is Carriers, Customs Officials, Port and Harbour Authorities and Regional Legislators and any other parties influential in the approval of documentation for radioactive materials in transit.

In October this year REVISS was again in Vienna to attend the IAEA International Conference on the Safe & Secure Transport of Radioactive Materials.

It is 50 years since the IAEA published the first issue of the Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials.  TS-R-1 (current issue) is now adopted by most counties of the World. The success of International Regulation of the transport of all types of radioactive material is borne-out by a history of 50 years shipping commercial quantities of radioactive material without radiological incident. However, past performance is no guarantee of future achievement and vigilance must be the watch-word in a global arena where safety cannot be viewed in isolation from security. The conference provided an international forum  for discussion of these two potentially contradictory objectives.

255 nominated delegates from 60 countries attended the Conference to hear 54 presented papers and take part in discussion and Working Groups. Delegates submitted written comments or questions to session presenters. To read a summary of the conference findings and access a link to the President's Report Click here .

20 YEARS of the PURIDEC Brand

The first PURIDEC Irradiation Sources were installed 20 years ago. During this time REVISS has shipped tens of thousands of cobalt-60 sources to more than 30 countries worldwide. REVISS Installation Engineers have more than 100 years of collective experience in the handling of radiation sources and in collaboration with the Load Planning and Optimisation Team they have completed hundreds of cobalt-60 installations in irradiation plants of all designs.

The launch of the PURIDEC brand of cobalt-60 sealed radiation sources in 1991 was the culmination of more than 30 years of UK source design and manufacture for industrial applications. PURIDEC Irradiation Technologies provided the global radiation processing market with the first significant competitor to the major supplier at the time. This brought pricing stability and security of supply for this vital component in the manufacture of sterile goods.

Driven by REVISS's significant and broad-based market penetration, unified conditions of water quality were announced in a joint paper presented by REVISS and the other main international supplier at the International Meeting on Radiation Processing in 2003.

As part of the surveillance programme in support of its 20 year source warranty, REVISS engineers have collected and analysed more than a thousand water samples from customer plants.

This anniversary provides measurable proof of the integrity of the 20 year recommended working life of the PURIDEC cobalt-60 source designs. Longevity and the worldwide presence of REVISS in support of its 20 year warranty period are the backbone to the trust that customers place in REVISS.

Time has established REVISS as the number two supplier of cobalt-60 in the world but the integrity of the engineering and support services provided by REVISS are second to none:

  • REVISS uses its own 20 foot fixed-end flat-racks, fitted with a proprietary securing mechanism that increases loading/unloading efficiency and accommodates up to 4 flasks per flat-rack
  • Trusted load planning optimisation that sets the standard for maintaining  plant performance
  • Flexible installation rotas to ensure shortest plant down times
  • All lifting equipment used by REVISS engineers is certified and independently inspected
  • 24 hour emergency response service worldwide

REVISS market presence and continuing growth in market-share is built upon customer confidence in the product and the service provider. Cobalt-60 sources are manufactured by many organisations but customer trust is won by engineering competence and service experience and you can't manufacture 100 man years of service experience.

USA Validates New Shipping Flask Design

The latest addition to the REVISS fleet of transport flasks, the GB/3981A/B(U)-96, has been validated by the US Department of Transportation for the carriage of Special Form Material to and from the USA.

Lead is an effective and convenient shielding material for transportation flasks. However there is an inevitable size/weight/capacity compromise compared with flasks that use depleted uranium shielding that is almost 70% more dense than lead.

REVISS's new fleet of lead-shielded flasks was designed using cutting-edge, "Finite Element Analysis". This was used to model the effect of stress and thermal extremes on the resistance of critical components to impact in transport accident scenarios. In this way it was possible to simulate drop tests while monitoring actual safety margins in regions of greatest vulnerability. This type of computer modelling enables drops to be simulated under a far wider ranging set of test and construction parameters than is ever practically possible using prototype flasks. The benefit is in maximising capacity while minimising weight and size without compromising safety.
